Los
Angeles, CA January 16, 2003
The hard driving guitars and pounding drums of San Francisco based
Dirty Power, won the night at Disc Makers Independent Music
World Series (IMWS) Southwest finals held
last Thursday night at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. As the
grand prize winner, Dirty Power took home over $35,000 in prizes,
including recording gear, instruments, CD manufacturing services,
DJ equipment, and more.
Dirty Power was one of six finalists who competed at the event before
a panel of twelve judges, including representatives from Billboard
Magazine, Universal Records, Elektra Records, MCA Records and others.
Commenting on their successful IMWS showcase, Dirty Power singer/Guitar
player Patrick Goodwin said, "We are in total shock. Our
manager entered us in this contest and we didn't think we had any
chance of making it to the finals much less winning it. This is pretty
much the greatest thing that has ever happened to us!"
Other artists showcasing that night included
rap act Knitwit, pop rockers Cody Lee, singer/songwriter Holly Ferguson,
driving rockers Picnic and Latin rock band The Gitanos.
Produced by Disc Makers, the IMWS is a nationwide live music showcase
that searches for the best unsigned talent in the country. The $35,000
grand prize includes a complete CD manufacturing package from Disc
Makers and gear and services from the contest's sponsors: Billboard
Magazine, MP3.com, Fender Guitars, TAXI, Zildjian, Alesis, Gemini
DJ, DW Drums, Shure Microphones, Remo Drumheads, and CD Baby.
Over 1,000 unsigned bands submitted their three-song demos to the
Southwest IMWS, which was open to all musicians not currently signed
to a major record label, and to all genres of music. Professional
music screeners from TAXI selected 100 semi-finalists from the entries
and the editors of Billboard Magazine chose the six finalists.
Ken Schlager, Editorial Direction of Billboard Music Group commented,
"The IMWS is a great way to expose talent to high-level media and
music business professionals. Billboard and The Musician's Guide to
Touring & promotion are thrilled to be involved in this program."
"We are delighted to join forces with our friends at Billboard,
Fender, MP3.com, CD Baby, TAXI, and other sponsoring companies to
help promote some of the top indie artists in the country," said Tony
van Veen, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Disc Makers. "These
artists fuel the industry and keep it vital. The IMWS is one of the
ways we are able to help recognize their talents and efforts, and
reward them for their hard work."
The IMWS takes place in four regions across
the country (Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, and Midwest), with the
final events being held in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and
Nashville. Disc Makers produces a compilation CD of each of the IMWS
events, featuring music from all six finalists and artists selected
from the pool of semi-finalists. Bands interested in entering the
IMWS can register any time at www.discmakers.com/imws.

Dirty Power Dirty Power is a San Francisco
based hard rock band. In Spring of 2000 former Pansy Division guitarist
Patrick Goodwin and drummer Jeff Potts, who was in a surf band called
Planet Seven, began to jam, working out a few of Goodwin's musical
ideas. They just wanted to play the loud (very loud) hard rock that
their respective bands were not really interested in. Initially it
was just a way to vent their musical frustrations, but a few weeks
of playing together gave birth to a number of songs. Guitar player
Steve Perrone, also from Planet Seven, was asked to join, as was friend
and bass player Nick Ulman. Holed up in their rehearsal studio for
almost a year, they kept writing, focused on a simple idea: good songs
played really loud. Drawing on the raw power of bands like AC/DC and
Motorhead, the hooks of Cheap Trick and Def Leppard, with the low-end
sludge of Black Sabbath and Fu-Manchu, Dirty Power has created a rock
monster. Dirty Power played their first official show on May 3rd,
2001 to a crowd of 30 or so people at the Eagle Tavern in San Francisco.
One year and dozen or so shows later the band was signed to Dead Teenager
Records, which sent them to record their first album with Jack Endino
in Seattle. To quote Jack's website "Dirty Power came up and we made
my favorite record of the year. Three months later and I'm still humming
their songs in spite of having recorded a bunch of other records in
the meantime!" In September 2002 the band played their first headline
show to a sold-out crowd at the Bottom Of The Hill and were praised
by the SF Guardian with a stellar show review and cover story. The
eponymous Dirty Power will be released on Dead Teenager Records early
2003, nationwide. Armed with a debut album of 11 heavy anthems, the
band will tour in the spring, hitting the road and hitting it hard.
