CD Baby unfair advantage - April 2009

Who said jazz is dead? Probably just a curmudgeonly critic or some moldy fig. Certainly no one's alerted the public, as jazz is the 4th highest-selling genre out of CD Baby's 20 musical categories (even outselling Country and Hip Hop). In this issue, we're proud to feature a handful of quality artists who keep the jazz tradition alive by making vital music that continues to thrill and evolve.

Pauseland
Pauseland – Palindrome
Chamber Jazz
For those that prefer their Jazz tinged with autumnal nostalgia, this eerie chamber jazz ensemble from Denmark has delivered the goods. Breathy horns play lonely lines over drifting guitar arpeggios. At times, the warm tones of tenor sax and flugelhorn can blend into one voice and then suddenly separate into their own melodic dances, chasing each other playfully in the same way that Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter did on albums like Nefertiti. The drums and bass propel the pieces forward with a mysterious, wandering arrhythmic tension. Occasionally Pauseland will employ looping devices to weave ambient tapestries that hang on a melodic line in the background, haunting the distances. Both arty and militantly understated, "Palindrome" is an expressive album devoid of flashiness and tasty as hell.

Brian Patneaude
Brian Patneaude – Riverview (feat. Mike Moreno, Jesse Chandler, and Danny Whelchel)
Contemporary Jazz
Think of your favorite jazz fusion records of the 80s and early-90s. Now imagine that they were all tastefully produced with great tones and not JUST great songs and technical prowess. Brian Patneaude's latest stunner as such an album. He's assembled a talented quartet (tenor sax/guitar/organ/drums) that has a sophisticated, lush sound. They can veer from the relaxed or plaintive to the downright funky without ever seeming to leave their comfort zone. 'Riverview' is a truly fine collection of original compositions and tunes by Don Grolnick and Billy Strayhorn that have been given a modern shine.

TRENDS WE'VE NOTICED

The Liquid Guitar Tone
Lightning-fast mastery of the fretboard? Check. Effortless sense of phrasing? Check. Rounded, watery guitar sound? Check. OK. All systems go for a tour through Guitarland where smooth tone doesn't have to equal "smooth jazz."
