Frequently asked questions

How much can a 12 inch vinyl hold?

For optimal sound quality, we consider 18-20 minutes per side ideal for a 12 inch vinyl record. We recommend that your record should contain no more than 22 minutes per side. The longer an album is, the more sonic compromises need to be made during mastering, most commonly leading to lower volume and less bass. If your album is 44 minutes or longer, consider releasing a double LP (another service provided by Disc Makers).

What is the most common vinyl record size?

The most-popular size for vinyl records is 12 inches, which is the standard size for a full-length album. We also offer 7" vinyl records if that's what you prefer!

What speed do 12 inch records play at?

The most-common speed for 12 inch vinyl records is 33 1/3 rotations per minute (RPM). This is the standard speed for LPs, and it allows a record to hold roughly 18-22 minutes of music per side. It is possible to cut a 12” record at 45 RPM, which makes them a “maxi single” which holds up to 15 minutes per side. However, this is uncommon in this day and age, except for limited copies for club DJs.

Do you offer test pressings for 12 inch vinyl records?

Yes, test pressings are available for purchase on any new record project! However, not every Disc Makers vinyl package automatically includes test pressings.

Since test pressings require a separate press setup, they tend to be expensive and lead to longer turn times. Disc Makers vinyl orders of 100 to 300 units typically do not include a test pressing. For orders of 500 or more records, we strongly recommend that you order you should order test pressings as an extra quality control step. For orders with test pressings, we ship 5 test pressings to you to reivew.

What additional services does Disc Makers offer for 12 inch vinyl records?

In addition to providing custom vinyl record pressing, Disc Makers offers post production mastering to optimize your sound, award-winning record jacket design, and record jacket printing (including wholesale printing services for pressing plants and record labels). We also create vinyl jackets for manufacturers. Our vinyl record jackets are available in super-shiny gloss UV, velvety matte UV, or semi-gloss aqueous finish.
